The band of 1084 (Market Harborough) squadron ATC returned to Poperinge and Ypres (Belgium) over the weekend of 13th to 15th March with the cadets playing in two important events.

On the Friday evening the band played during the wreath laying of the Last post ceremony at the Menin Gate. The squadron also laid a wreath with Cadet Tom King (13) on behalf of the squadron.

Flight Sergeant Sarah Johnson said “This was my last time playing at the Menin gate and the event made me really emotional”

On Sunday at Tynecot Cemetery, a small ceremony was help with the Padre Philip Clements leading the service with the Trumpet section playing last post and revile. Some of the other visitors joined us and thanked the trumpeters at the end.

After lunch the Band took part in the 49th Annual carnival through the streets of Poperinge. Although it was cold cadet Megan Bentley said “this was my first visit and I really enjoyed the carnival and would like to come again next year”.

While the Band were not playing the cadets visited various WW1 battlefields, and cemeteries on the Saturday they were in the Somme, on the Sunday and Monday they were in the Yypres Salient.

At the end of the weekend CI Michael Blow was presented with a gift for organising the weekend, Paul Grimley was also presented with a gift for acting as guide and making the visits so informative
